Partial lunar eclipse phase just after the total lunar eclipse on September 28, 2015. The Moon has traveled into Earth’s shadow at full moon so that Earth blocks direct sunlight from illuminating the Moon and a lunar eclipse occurs. Lunar eclipses can be total, when the Moon travels completely into Earth’s shadow, or partial, when only part of the Moon enters Earth’s shadow. Total lunar eclipses also have partial phases before and after their total phase.
