Ice crystals in cirrus clouds reflect and refract sunlight, showing the colors of the human visible spectrum in a faint circular halo around the Sun, 2018. When sunlight enters the Earth’s atmosphere, it contains only 40% light that is visible to human eyes, as 10% of the sunlight is ultraviolet and 50% infrared light and therefore outside of the human visible spectrum. Earth’s atmosphere then filters out most of the ultraviolet light, however.
